Fall 2009 Courses
January 2010
  • ECON 675-2 - Understanding the Global Economic Crisis
  • Official catalog description
  • Course meets on campus, M-F 1:00-4:00pm, room TBA
  • Prerequisites: none.  If you've never taken courses in economics, business, or government, you are welcome in this course!   You will learn a lot about how the economy works, without ever cracking open an economics textbook!
  • More information about the course (tentative):
In this course, we will read and discuss recent articles and books (NOT textbooks, but mass-market books written for a general audience).  We will do a one-day field trip to Chicago to visit the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and meet with a Federal Reserve official to get an inside perspective on the crisis.  You will be immersed in the subject matter for four weeks, and will learn a LOT about how the world works and what went wrong.  The course grade will be based on class participation, written assignments, class presentations, and exams.
Spring 2010 Courses
  • I have listed the required book purchases for each of my Spring 2010 courses.  To avoid the high Carthage bookstore markup, please shop the web before the semester starts.  As of early November, bn.com is offering most of these books for significantly less than their full retail prices.  eBay is also a good place to check - just be sure to buy only from highly reputable sellers and allow enough time for shipping.
  • ECON 102 - Principles of Macroeconomics
Required textbook:  Brief Principles of Macroeconomics, 5th edition, by N. Gregory Mankiw.
Also required:  Each student must purchase an i-clicker to use in classroom polling, practice exam questions, and other classroom activities.
  • ECON 329 - International Finance
Required textbook: either International Macroeconomics by Feenstra and Taylor, or International Economics by Feenstra and Taylor.  (The latter contains all chapters of the former, plus chapters from their International Trade textbook which Dr. Schlack uses in ECON 327.)
Optional:  The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 by Paul Krugman
Optional:  Fixing Global Finance by Martin Wolf
