Course Plan: Instruction in this course is
divided into thirds, roughly chronologically. The first part will survey
the context and events connected with the rise and formation of Islam, ending
with the formation of the Shari'a. The second part will look at Islamic
religious life and expression, whether in ritual/daily practice, mystical
disciplines, or literature. The final section will examine more
contemporary issues in Islam, particularly the place of women, and the way that
the Muslim resurgence in the past generation has both shaped and been shaped by
political, social, and economic factors.
