570--Muhammad born, in the "year of the Elephant"
595--Muhammad marries Khadijah.
610--First Revelation of the Qur`an, on Mt. Hira outside
Mecca.
613--Muhammad first begins to preach publicly.
614??--The "Satanic
verses," (later abrogated) which allowed worship of three goddesses in addition
to Allah. (*see note below)
619--Deaths of Khadija, and Abu Talib (Muhammad's uncle and
protector). Persecution of Muslims increases.
620--First converts from
Yathrib (Medina) during the annual Meccan pilgrimage.
621--Further converts
from Yathrib.
622--Hijrah ("Migration") of the Prophet to Yathrib,
establishment of the Muslim community there, and the beginning of the Islamic
calendar.
624--Battle of Badr. 300 Muslims soundly defeat 1,000 Meccans.
625--Battle of Uhud. Muslim defeat, Prophet slightly wounded.
627--Battle of the Ditch. Medinans outwait Meccans and their Bedouin allies.
628--Attempt to
make the Pilgrimage to Mecca results in the Treaty of Hudaybah, in which the
Muslims agree to forego the pilgrimage that year, but will be allowed to perform
it the next year.
629--Muhammad and his followers perform the pilgrimage
to Mecca.
630--Muhammad takes advantage of a breach of treaty to march on
Mecca with 10,000 followers, Mecca surrenders w/out bloodshed, Kaba is cleansed
of idols.
631--"Year of Tributes" (solidifying control of the Arabian
peninsula).
632--Death of the Prophet, Abu Bakr elected as caliph
*This reference to the "Satanic Verses" does NOT refer to Salman Rushdie's
book (which most Muslims see as slandering the Prophet Muhammad), but to a
revelation which the Prophet first took to be genuine, but was later deemed to
have come from Satan, and not Allah. It is no surprise that the original
verses were abrogated, since they contradict one of Islam's fundamental
tenets--that Allah is the only God, and one should worship Allah alone.
