June 1, 1999

This J-term trip was, for me, a chance to apply what I had learned in various religion courses to a culture that included those religions. It was interesting to learn about Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism in the classroom and to hear Jim's stories about India, but these religions did not become REAL to me until I took this trip. Actually walking among renunciates, women covered from head-to-toe, and orthodox Sikhs brought home the lessons learned in classes previous to the trip and made me want to take even more of these when we returned. Actually stepping into the holy places of Indian people and becoming a part of their experience brought me so much closer to understanding the people, the culture, and the history of the diverse country. The whole trip affected me deeply by making me step into this foreign world of religion and life and through interactions with my classmates. The fun times, amazing sights, and new knowledge of myself learned from this trip will never leave me.
