Tue. 8 January: Morning Orientation at Carthage, 1:00 p.m. departure from the TWC (Class Powerpoint).
Wed. 9 January: En route to India.
Thu. 10 January: Delhi--Arrive 5:50 a.m., nap, noon excursion to Akshar Dham temple.
Fri. 11 January: Easy excursion (by subway) to the Qutb Minar and the Lodhi Gardens.
Sat. 12 January: Day trip to Agra; visits to the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. Late evening return to Delhi
Sun. 13 January: Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Visits to the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Gurudwara Sisganj (site of the martyrdom of Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the ten Sikh gurus) and Chandni Chowk (the traditional commercial bazaar). The first two were built by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1627-58), and the area around them both is still heavily Muslim. Delhi's Jama Masjid was built to hold all of the city's faithful for the Friday prayer, and is one of the largest mosques in Asia (can hold 25,000 people).
Mon. 14 January: Morning departure for Amritsar on the Swarn Shatabdi Express. Early afternoon arrival; initial visit to the Harmandir Sahib (also known as the Golden Temple), the holiest site for the Sikhs, and to the Akal Takht (the adjoining complex of buildings seen as the locus of the Sikh guru's temporal power). On at least one night in Amritsar, view the closing ceremonies at the Harmandir Sahib.
Tues. 15 January: Free day in Amritsar. Visit to the Central Sikh Museum and the Jallianwala Bagh.
Wed. 16 January: Gurudwara Tour to nearby historical sites.
Thu. 17 January: Durgiana Temple and other Amritsar sites.
Fri. 18 January: Morning departure for Haridwar on the Hardwar-Amritsar Jan Shatabdi. Early afternoon arrival, informal walking tour through the old city and viewing evening ceremonies at the Ganges.
Sat. 19 January: Hardwar Bazaar scavenger hunt.
Sun. 20 January: Excursion to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples.
Mon. 21 January: Visit to the neighboring town of Kankhal, to view the Daksha Mahadev temple, and the burial shrine of the Hindu mystic Anandamayi Ma
Tue. 22 January: Afternoon visits to the "modern" temples north of Hardwar. (First Architecture Paper due).
Wed. 23 January: Afternoon departure for Ajmer on the Hardwar-Ahmadebad Mail
Thur. 24 January: Early morning arrival in Ajmer, side trip to see the tomb of the Sufi saint Mu-in ud-din Chishti, onward travel to Pushkar.
Fri. 25 January: Early morning excursion to the Pap Mochini ("Freeing from Evil") temple.
Sat. 26 January: Early morning excursion to to the Savitri Temple and the Brahma Temple.
Sun. 27 January: Morning free, afternoon journey to Delhi on the Ajmer-Delhi Shatabdi Express.
Mon. 28 January: Resting and shopping, 5 p.m. departure for the airport. (Second Architecture Paper due).
Tue. 29
January: Arrival in Chicago, journey's end.
Saturday Feb. 2: Final Exams due by 6 pm CST (by email).
