Chandi Devi is a temple to the Goddess Chandi on the hills to the east of Haridwar. Until quite recently the only way to get there was to walk--either a painful 1 1/2 miles straight up, or an easy 4 mile hike around the back side. In November 1996 local interests opened a cable car to the temple (from which this picture was taken). This has increased pilgrim traffic and revenues, but has also changed the atmosphere there, by making it a much busier place.
