Agra

For over a century Agra was the Mughal capital and one of South Asia's most important cities.  Although most famous for the Taj Mahal, Agra has many other significant historical sites.  This is the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, father-in-law to the emperor Jahangir. It was built a generation before the Taj Mahal, with which it shares two key features: both are situated in formal gardens, and both are decorated with pietra dura,  work, in which designs are created by inlaying semiprecious stones into marble.

This garden outside the tomb of Itimad ud-daulah shows the geometric patterns so characteristic of Islamic art.  The perimeter is a hexagon, with a six pointed star and six parallelograms on the inside.
