Course Plan: Instruction in this course is
divided into thirds, roughly chronologically. The first part will survey
enduring themes in Chinese culture, as well as the Confucian and Daoist texts
that have formed its bedrock. The second will examine Chinese religion
between the Sui and Sung Dynasties, and the developments in Japanese religion in
that same time. The final section will look at the way religious ideas are
connected to East Asian culture and practice, and the way that religion has
influenced modern East Asian culture, and been transformed by it.
